A question about : Finding a qualified car electrician?

Hi all, I'm looking for some tips please on how to find a good qualified local car electrician?

With normal electricians and plumbers etc there are sites like checkatrade. But what is there for car garages? I have a small bit of rewiring that needs doing and I'm not confident to try it myself so have to put my trust in a garage for the first time.

Are these garage electricians even required to be qualified?

I'm just concerned they are going to make a mess of it, want it done right first time.

Cheers!

Best answers:

  • Anyone can set themselves up as tech., mech., or autoelectrician. Is this a specific job, like ICE or a phone? Ask the taxi boys who they use. Anything more general ask a local garage, but beware, there are plenty out there who think they are the bees knees and they are awful. Local guy round here, in the trade for years, sign-written van etc., is known as Bob the Bulb. Absolutely clueless about anything in depth and just about good enough to change a bulb.
  • Also depends on what you want them to do, Checking basic lighting and starting system wiring or delve into the workings of the ECU.
  • Without a doubt, the best way is personal recommendation. A good mechanic will quickly earn a reputation in the local area ( as will a bad one ! )
Ask friends and neighbours who they use, if you have a local community Facebook page ask on there. And as Colino suggests, taxi drivers are another good source of info - after all, it's their livelihood, they can't afford to be messed about by dodgy mechanics.
