A question about : English Dog Strategy

All, apologies for potentially spamming this, but thought it would be relevant to some on here. I'm a board contributor so thought it would be ok, but moderators, please feel free to delete if against the rules.

Some of you might be aware that there has been a set of recommendations put forward to parliament regarding dog legislation in England. I've just written up a summary of it on my website that might be interesting.

APGAW Dog Strategy - The Practical Companion

The proposals seem sensible, but could mean significant changes if adopted by Parliament.

Best answers:

  • Perhaps you could amend the title of you thread to reflect that they are not UK wide recommendations
  • Good point, I still feel slightly xenephobic referring to just england, but it is English law. How do I amend the title though? I can edit my post, but can't seem to adjust the title.
  • You can change the title by clicking "edit", then click on"Go Advanced" which will show you the title, then you can amend.
  • In a nutshell, I'd say and end to breed specific legislation is on the cards (end to dangerous dogs act), and likely to see some form of dog licensing proposed.
Some really good, sensible recommendations, but a many areas will fail in enforcement if not properly implemented. Hopefully they will focus on a few of the core areas and get them right.
  • sounds good
    hope they dna dogs too
so they can trace the dog fowlers.
    grrrr
  • Just thought I'd let you know I've put part 2 up if anyone is interested?

    Covers breeding/trading and dog identification.
Summary is that there are some good proposals regarding breeding legislation that could improve animal welfare greatly, but my worry is how it can be enforced, and what behaviour might be driven out of enforcement.
  • Last bump on this one. 3rd and final part is up. Interesting recommendstions on maximum prison sentences (too lenient imo) and potential funding of proposals, which have mentions of potential levy on dog related products as well as licensing.

  • Current punishment is far too light, and I don't think 2 years is going far enough, but at least it is a step in the right direction. I am sick of reading about someone who killed or seriously hurt their dog or other pet, and all they get is a suspended sentence, a fine and banned for 10 years from owning an animal.
  • Came late to the party but very interesting! Thank you.
I would like to get updates, have registered my email address, but have received no email to click on.
  • Just sent you a PM
