A question about : Energy Saving Bulb

Hi
Thinking of changing bulbs in the house for something more money saving.
In my sons bedroom light is on most of the time, which consists of 4, 40w bulbs all a small screw thread spotlight type bulb.
So at any one time 160w , looking at equivalent type of bulb to save on bills.

Trouble is these bulbs are really cheap either 3 or 4 for a pound in the pound shops, looking at energy bulbs which are considerably more.

Anyone recommend any replacement bulbs, and how long they would take to actually save money.
Thanks

  • Say you changed to 5 watt LED bulbs so saving 35W per bulb and they cost Ј8 each.
Ј8 buys you 61.5 kWh of electricity (at 13p a kW) or 61500 Watts, divide that by 35 watts = 1757 hours, so after 1757 hours the LED bulb starts paying for it's self , if it is on 6 hours a day then the break even point is 292 days.
The 292 days will be the same no matter how many bulbs you replace, you will just save more.
The LED bulb should last 20000 hours so will pay for its self 10 times or so.
Do change them now, don't wait for the existing bulbs to blow, this is a false economy.
I only by branded bulbs (phillips, GE, osram, compton etc) from reputable retailers( LED Hut, CP Lighting, etc), not eBay. as that is a bit hit and miss.
  • I'd second what MX5huggy has said, LED bulbs (especially the "known" brands such as Philips and Osram etc) tend to cost a fair chunk but they pay for themselves.
I swapped the R50's in my computer room over to LED's when the old low energy CFL types started to die and the light is much better than the CFL.
I've also gone 4 months with the LED bulbs without a single failure, whilst with the incandescent/traditional bulbs I was replacing one every week or so (typically after grabbing a torch to head to the breaker box as they had about a 1 in 4 chance of tripping the breaker when they went).
IIRC both B&Q and Tesco are/were doing deals on some LED (Osram I think) bulbs last time I was in there, in the case of Tesco it was a third off a couple of weeks back, and at about the same time I think B&Q were doing a 3 for 2 or similar offer on selected bulbs.

  • Thanks for your replies have order from ledhut, via topcashback
  • Ikea are selling led bulbs, at reasonable prices. 2 pk Ј5 + they have all shapes, sizes and fittings. The prices seem to be coming down all the time. Best of all these are 'instant on' no more having to wait, for them to warm up, as the energy saving bulbs in the past.
  • Im not really interested in the technical jargon.....the price, efficiency, brightness, and low energy are my main concern, and I am very happy with all of these factors with the LED lamps I bought from IKEA. Sorry, Didn't realise they don't have bayonet fittings, but I have adaptors BC-ES in our fittings.
