A question about : Dumb question

Sorry i feel i should know the answer to this but i don't!

I have a DD to pay off the minimum on my card. If i want to pay extra does this leave my DD unaffected, even if i pay more than the minimum for that month. i.e. minimum by dd Ј130, a week before thats due i pay a spare Ј150 i have will they still take the Ј130? (i want them to the Ј150 is extra to my min payment!)

Sorry i think I've made that sound really complicated. Hope you get my drift.

TIA Andy

  • Not a dumb question and I am not sure of the answer with all accounts.
But I know I paid extra into a Cahoot once, and then they didn't take the minimum payment because it was classed as payment already made.
  • It depends on your card provider. Either check with them to understand how manual payments interact with DDs, or make the additional payment just after the DD is taken.
  • Its virgin (MBNA). I shall give em a ring!!
    (i am not dumb!!! Whoop!!)
  • In my experience with MBNA yes, they will still take the DD regardless of any extra payments you make.
  • Ok checked the virgin site
Your Direct Debit payment will be taken whether or not you've made any additional payments. It will be credited to your Virgin Credit Card account on your payment due date, and taken from your bank account on the same or next day.
So thats a yes they will take your DD even if you make additional payments.
    Thanks for your advice.
  • My top tip to you is to set up a standing order each month for Ј1 to your credit card account, set to go out 2 working days before your Direct Debit goes out. That way you can avoid the minimum payment markers on your credit report.
