A question about : Delay registration on a pre-reg car

Hello all,
I recently agreed to buy a new pre-reg car from a dealer and was given an estimated delivery date on end of Jan. I was told at the time that the date may vary and the dealer would give me weekly updates.
The dealer has been doing this and the latest delivery date is estimated at 24th Feb.
Seeing as that is only 1 week before the new 15plates will be available I have asked the dealer to delay registration for 1week so it is registered as a 15 and not a 64 plate but they have not given me an answer.

I know it doesn't make much difference but it is a present for my wife and the number 15 does have some significance to her. If only I'd thought about it at the time of ordering.

Anyway... I've paid a deposit. Is there anything I can do to delay this?
I know it's not the end of the world but I am just curious.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Best answers:

  • Isn't the idea of pre reg to get inside some sort of sales deadline?
  • Your car will be pre-registered as a 64 plate thus enabling the dealer to reach certain sales targets.
You won't be getting a 15 plate (unless there is a blue moon between now and March)
  • There seems to be some confusion here.
A pre-reg car is a new car which the dealer has already registered, in order to meet sales targets, and is then sold as second-hand at a discount. It is normally sitting at the dealers premises, ready to drive away at very short notice.
The uncertainty about delivery dates suggests either that it isn't a pre-reg, or that the dealer is desperately scouring the country in the hope that someone else has a suitable pre-reg looking for a home.
  • Pre- Registered means its already registered, The only way your going to get a newer one is if something tragic happens to that car and they need to supply a new one.
As Car 54 said. The car with that reg will be sitting around somewhere, Odd they have not delivered it yet..
My spider sense would be tingling and i suggest you get the vehicle checked for paint repairs. It maybe in the bodyshop.
  • The manufacturer could have pre-regged it to the dealer, but not go around to delivering it yet, somewhere in the system.
Easiest thing, if you are worried, is to ask the dealer for the reg number, he should be able to give it to you, even if he doesn't have it there yet.
  • Thank you all for your replies.
Looks like I missed a part of the information. The car is a new car, ordered to the specification I require. The dealer said the only way he could beat the deal I was getting online was to do the deal as a pre-reg deal.
So I suppose my question is .. if the car is meant for me, can (or will) the dealer register the car without any signed paperwork or money from me?
If the car does arrive on the 24th I won't be able to make it to the dealership until the 28th at the earliest so if he can't (won't) register the car until I have signed something or handed over some money then I am happy to wait until Sunday 1st.
Hope that makes things a little clearer.
  • They will register it before their deadline. I guess its possible to register with just a chassis number before the cars even built.
  • One thing you need to check with the dealer is that they intend to register you as the 2nd keeper when you take possession of the car and not, as in some cases, hold onto the logbook and keep themselves as the registered keeper for a period of time, typically 3 months or more.
  • Sorry, this doesn't make sense. A pre-reg car is a built, existing car, sitting somewhere on its tyres with an allocated reg. number.
It sounds like the trader got down to such a low number that he gambled that he could trawl the networks to find one to your spec. and has so far failed.
  • Basically if the dealer hasn't registered it yet, tell them you don't want it registered until the 1st March with a 15 plate on.
Infact they must be able to get hold of the 15 plate numbers before hand. I saw a row of cars at a dealer a couple of years ago with new plates already on a couple of weeks before the plate due date.
  • No a pre-reg car is in existence. I've no idea where you are getting your info. from or are just making it up, but to apply to the DVLA for a registration number, you need the info. from the Certificate of Conformity. That is only available when a car rolls off the production line. (Or have you built a kit yourself?)
Manufacturers don't register cars, the dealership takes care of the paperwork for the retail customer.
  • Once again, thank you all for your input.
The car is new with some extras I have requested. It will be registered by the dealer with the dealer as the first owner. I will then take ownership of the car as the 2nd owner.
I have requested that the dealer delay registration until March 1st.
It isn't a big deal if it is registered as a 64 plate I was just curious if I could 'threaten' (I don't like that word) to walk away unless they agreed.
I have absolutely no intention of walking away as I am happy with the price that has been agreed.
  • Presumably the price you paid was based upon it being a pre-reg, 2nd owner 64 plate. I would suspect that if you ask them to delay to a 15 plate, you will have to pay the appropriate price difference.
