A question about : intestacy, transferable iht allowance and joint assets?

My Dad died a in 2011 without leaving a will, we never got probate done, as we thought it wasn't needed. Recently my Mum died, and I'm just working out her probate.

The total estate when my Dad died was probably about Ј500k, but it was all jointly owned with my Mum, a house, shares, and bank accounts.

The total estate now is worth about Ј600k at most, I can't work out what the nil rate band would be, did the jointly owned assets count against my Dads nil rate band when he died?

My Dad's estate has holdings of a number of different shares, mostly FTS100 / 250. All of them are on personally held certificates, rather than through nominees, so at the weekend I despatched umpteen letters to umpteen registrars with umpteen death certificates, asking for confirmation of the holding and any dividends due at DoD.

Thanks for everyone who answered my previous post regarding the death of my father and intestacy. I have another concern but I didn't know who to turn to for help and CAB here is closed.

My dad died on 10/12/2014. He was meant to be repatriated but the repatriation had been delayed due to complications with my gran so he was repatriation on 29/01/2015 in order to be buried tomorrow. I couldn't travel with him for pregnancy related reasons.

A question about : Deceased Estates Notice

I understand that to protect myself as an executor, I should place a Deceased Estates Notice in the London Gazette but am unsure as to whether it is necessary to also place one in a local newspaper in the area if there is no land/property (i.e. a house) involved in the estate.

I've had a look at the section 27 item 1 excerpt from the Trustee Act (can't post a link to it though as I'm still a newbie) and have done a fair bit of googling but haven't been able to come up with a definitive answer.

Hi all, wondering if you could help.

My uncle recently passed away and left me and my mother the executors. I have completed the probate paperwork (hopefully correctly!) and am now about to send the forms off.

I just have two questions.

A question about : Land registry transfer of deceased spouse?

Mt mother in law and father in law had mirror wills leaving everything to each other. My wife is the sole benficiary when the second parent dies and is the sole executor.
The total assets were a single joint bank account and the jointly owned fully paid off house.

My father in law died in 2010 and as everything was simple (the two joint assets - the house and bank ac both automatically passed to my m-i-l) we did not need to obtain probate.

A question about : confused by order of events

Hi

I was just after some views or info on what might happen in my current situation.

My Grandad is currently expected to die from cancer by March/April. In his will he has left his property to my Dad. However my Dad is currently unlikely to survive the next couple of days.

What would happen if my Dad dies before my Grandad? Can someone leave money/property to the estate of someone who is already dead?

I have searched high and low on Google and cannot seem to find anything which covers this scenario.
