A question about : Company hassling us when we have payment arrangement in place

My husband and I have 2 debts that we have arrangements to pay off, we recently lost our jobs and I phoned up both companies to let them know we would have to lower the payments. One company we have never had any problems with they are brilliant, however the other company is a nightmare. I always like to pay them every Friday and over the years whenever the payments are due (they work it out every 2 weeks on the Friday) they send me reminder txts and letters saying that my payment is due before it is! Various times I have asked them not to do this and for a time they stop, but as soon as I make a new arrangement they start again. I know this sounds really silly but it annoys me and makes me worried and anxious.I think I heard somewhere that companies were not allowed to do this and can get in quite a lot of trouble for doing it. Can anyone advise if I heard correctly?

Best answers:

  • If companies agree to a repayment plan and then continue to hassle you even when you follow the plan, then they are not following the Office of Fair Trading's Debt Collecting Guidance and should stop immediately.
They're not obliged to agree to a repayment plan, but if they've done so, and you have proof, then make a complain to the company and the OFT about their conduct. You can complain the financial ombudsman eight weeks after you've complained to the company if they haven't dealt with your complaint in a satisfactory manner (i.e. stopped hassling you).
