A question about : Cheaper car insurance

Looking for cheaper car insurance for NI, most of the main insurers will not provide cover for NI. At the mo insured with privilege, they now no longer operate over here but will honour current customers policies. I think they are sticking the arm in because of this. Anyone got any suggestions? BTW driving a 97 saxo vtr, F, age 29

  • Did you try Quinn Direct 0845 850 0845?
    or
    Hughes & Company in Portadown 028 3833 3444
God help you if you're like me an live in Newry
    https://archives.tcm.ie/newrydemocrat...0/story325.asp
Both will still be expensive ..... but another 2 options for you if you haven't already tried
  • Cheers Ciaran, will try those next month when my ins is due
  • You could try Erne Insurance 028 6862 8019 and Open & Direct 028 7131 0000.
  • Hi A-b,
Try AXA - 0800 282820. I was with them for about 5 years then shopped around and found them to be a bit more expensive. Therefore, I changed last year to Abbey. This year however, I have found Abbey to be the most expensive and after a lot more shopping around have gone back to AXA.
Why is insurance here so Bl**dy expensive??
  • Was with axa before and they refused to cover my c ar as I'm under 30 and my car is classed as a hot hatch, yet my previous car was 2 insurance groups higher and they covered that no probs, also axa wouldn't cover me for business, which I need. Thanx for the tips anyway, agree with you on why insurance is so expensive over here, flippin ridiculous >
  • >
Why is our car insurance so expensive? Because thousands of greedy people make fraudulent claims! It is the biggest scam and although insurance companies know it goes on they do nothing to stop it.
  • The old excuse used to be because of the troubles, now it's there are too many claims > >
  • I got mine from www.surequoteonline.com (C.J. Higgins of Mallusk Rd, Glengormly) and it was cheapest for me, at least you can get a quote online so you can do it from home in the evening.

  • NI insurance has always been high ... what do we expect ... we have a 2 mph dunt and we claim for whiplash (Michael Schumacher can hit a wall at 180mph and get straight back into a car without complaint). We are also prone to raising fradulent claims (e.g. a relation tail ended a car, got out apologised, exchanged details with the other driver, drove on and then found out that the car he hit had inherited 3 passengers all claiming whiplash - the driver had been by himself). Another example is that a friend of mine wanted a new carpet but was to mean to buy one so I watched him deliberately pour paint onto his carpet so that he could claim for a new one from his household insurance.
I know we are not the only ones doing this but, I repeat, what do you expect. I believe however that there is a possible way out - but I don't think any insurance company would have the guts to do it.
We all have to accept that throughout life s**t happens which is one of the reasons why we have insurance. The problem is that we are all paying for other peoples fraudulent claims. Therefore lets stop insuring each other - get rid of liability insurance and third party insurance - the only person you insure is yourself (and other family members). If someone is driving without insurance and has an accident then it is their tough luck. Irrespective of whos fault the accident is they get nothing and have no redress ... they took a gamble and they lost.
We basically need to put a value on our own property and lives. If I believe my car is worth Ј20K and my life is worth Ј250K then that is what I insure myself for. If someone else with the same car and standard of living tries to cut costs and insures their car for Ј5K and their life for Ј10K then, irrespective of fault, they will get a much lesser payout.
Given that the only persons who premiums are affected by a calim is yourself then this should reduce the stupid and fraudulent claims.

  • For a good rate of insurance you should try the Ulster Farmers Union, call you local office. For my wife they were about the same price as quinns when she just started to drive 27 but once she had a years no claims they give you an accelerator no claims and it was half the price of Quinn Direct for year two.

PS Thanks Martin for setting up a board for us stuck over here with the dreggs of all services!!
  • Every year I try loads of companies, and for me it always seems that L Hughes and Co are cheapest, closely followed by the Northern Bank.
I don't think the difference in prices of insurance between here and the rest of the UK is now as great as it once was, well certainly not compared to London. Working in the media (like I do) doesn't help. I was once told that the reason working in the media affected my premium was that I "may be driving well-known people around". Well there you go. I'm obviously driving Terry Wogan round Shepherd's Bush at dangerously high speed in my sleep.
  • I switched from Abbey to Adelaide after getting a really reasonable quote for my last year of insurance. Then my car blew up (that's a whole other story, don't get me started on certain makes of car and their dealerships) and I bought a car with a year's free insurance - I'm on tenterhooks, though, as they set my excess at Ј600!!! Oh well... It'll be interesting to see if they'll quote me when this free year is up. I agree with you Marksi, they really do get the arm into you if you work in the media. Hello?! Is this Northern Ireland or Northern Iraq - how blinkin' dangerous a place can it really be?!? And do you see THAT many hugely valuable celebs being chauffered by journos?!
  • I was quoted Ј960 by Hughes and Co. for me and my girlfriend (26 and 23 respectively) on a Fiesta or Ј750 for myself and I have 2 yrs no-claims!!
Went online to admiral and got cover for Ј647 for us both - they charged just Ј7 extra for having my girlfrend on it.
Shop around alot - and do the internet searches - elephant and admiral are cheap and insure people in Northern Ireland - don't ring them!!!! Ј1 a minute or somthing like that.
My only reservation is if I have a claim I have heard their customer service is not the best, but I am willing to take that risk to save so much money
  • I only bought my first car back in Jan this year... and I have also only had my full driver's license for 10 months so I knew I'd have a hard time getting insurance but I got a great deal!!!
I was initially getting quotes of around Ј1200 or Ј1700 but then I contacted this fella:
    Gareth Hunter - Tel: 028 9086 6103
I ended up getting my insurance for Ј640!!! And will end up this year (assuming I don't have an accident!) with FULL no-claims bonus!!!
Gareth Hunter takes your details, searches for the best deal and then tells you what he has found... then if you like what he has offered and wish to go with the quote he has found then he charges you only Ј20 for finding it for you! He knows about the offers and deals with a lot of the other insurance companies who operate in the province.
You don't pay if you don't accept any of the ones he finds so do try him!
  • Oh - and I should have added that the car was 1 year old and insured as a Ј5,000 car...
    C
  • I was with admiral for 5 years as no one could touch them in NI then this year for some reason The AA beat my renewal with admiral by over Ј200.
28yr old male with 9yrs NCB driving a modified BMW 328i
my insurance with AA = Ј765 Fully comp protected
  • I've been with Alastair Laird's (028 8676 4138) for some years now, after Hughes went up and up and up with my insurance. I kept checking with several other companies each year, and they could never be beaten, so for the last year or two, so long as my premiums didn't go up too much, I didn't bother checking around too much. My last premium (last Sep) on a Zafira 1.8L,
with me F37, hubby 36 and childminder F27 was Ј470 approx., fully comp., full no claims.
  • I'll def be trying Gareth when my years ins is up - if it saves me the afternoon and 20 phone calls searching for quotes then it's worth Ј20 to me!
The best I've found so far was the NFU (Farmers union) coming in around Ј400 cheaper than the next nearest quote!
  • I've used Admiral for the last couple of years. Their customer service is terrible, but prices are cheapest by far.
