A question about : cash4tax

Hello all,

In August last year I had a tax rebate of Ј525 I had been expecting this rebate for a while as I was put on emergency tax in 2010. I googled tax rebate and flicked through a few sites however seeing how much commission they charged did go through with any of the companies as phoning the tax office myself was free.

In December I recieved a letter from a company called cash4tax telling me I had 30 days to pay them Ј225 with threats of a debt recovery company etc. I tried phoning this company numerous times but only getting in touch with their answer machine. I did not leave any contact details with them as I've always been taught to never give my phone number out to companies. Thinking this was maybe a spam letter or something I left it there as I had not agreed to any companies terms and conditions and also didn't sign any agreements or provide documents to them.

On Monday I received an email from a company called Daniel Silverman debt recovery informing me that I had 7 days to pay the balance in full or else *insert list of debt company threats*

So basically what I would like to know is can this company work on my behalf if I do not agree for them to do so? They haven't received any documents such as my p60 or had my signature or permission to do act on my behalf. I also have not agreed to any terms and conditions? who would want to pay 50% of a tax rebate when getting it back yourself doesn't cost anything.

Thank you in advance

  • Sounds like a scam to me.
  • I thought so too but it's the debt collector being involved that is worrying me
  • Hi there my son has just had this exact thing happen to him,how did this progress?
  • I had a vet's bill passed over to Daniel Silverman, and the people in that office were extremely helpful and understanding, so it might be worth giving them a call to explain your situation. I was panicked when I first received their letter, but working on the MSE principle of 'if I haven't got it, they can't take it', they were very amenable to the payment plan I offered them. However, your situation is different as, unlike me, you don't owe the money in the first place....However, knowing them to be helpful and sympathetic on the phone, they would at least be someone you could contact as a starting point, perhaps?
  • Don't phone them. Send them a prove it letter, stating that you do not acknowledge the debt at all, and demand that they provide prrof that the debt actually belongs to you, or they can get stuffed.
Send it recorded, print your signature (don't sign it properly) and then sit back and wait. If they have proof that you signed up, they will have to provide it. Or, they will get stuffed. :-)
