A question about : Car insurance massive hike, but why?

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can possibly advise why my car insurance has nearly double in the last year? Last year I paid approximately Ј370 for fully comp insurance and this year the cheapest I can get is Ј590 adding on my parents and having a Ј700 excess on the policy. If I put the excess to Ј250 I am looking at Ј675 as the cheapest.

I am Female, 26, 4 years no claims bonus, driving for over 9 years and only drive 8000 miles a year at a push. I drive a 1.5 Nissan Qashqai and live in a South Birmingham, very close to Solihull. My car is in a secure public car park during the day and on the drive way at home (which no one would know where it is at all)

As I am a civil servant I have tried using LV and Aviva as they normally favour us and provide a discount and they have come up at Ј1404 and Ј2257 respectively.

If anyone can think I am missing anything please let me know but I am at a loss why my price has hiked so much. I have tried all the price comparison sites, direct line, topcashback etc.

Many Thanks in advance.

Best answers:

  • The discount that females got was outlawed and is now starting to filter through with higher premiums for women to bring it inline with men, 3 Women I know have all had increased premiums for this
  • My last insurance policy fell under this rule as well, I understand there has been some changes but this will mostly effect those under 25. My insurance increased by Ј80 last year and that was when I went from a sports car to my Qashqai so it's shocking to think it has nearly doubled again.
  • Reaching 25 isn't a major milestone for premiums.
The main difference on hitting 25 is the dropping of the compulsory extra excess for under 25s.
  • I think you'll find premiums in Solihull have been increasing due to a spike in theft of cars, there's a good chance this will also affect areas surrounding it
