A question about : Can you buy alcohol at Tesco at any time of day/night

Just a quickie. Intending to go really early to Tesco tomorrow. I am intending to buy some beers (on offertitle=Wink) in with the shopping. I know after a certain time at night they used to stop you buying alcohol (not sure if this is still the same, been a while since I went very late). Just wondering how early they are allowed to sell it?
Dont want to go too early & find I can't have the beers. (DH birthday Friday & got friends coming over)

Many thanks.

Best answers:

  • its 10am - 10pm daily inc sundays now
  • Thanks for that. May have to adjust my plans a bit.
  • I thought alcohol was available from when the store opens eg 6, 7 or 8 am and sold until 10 pm even if its a 24hour store you cant buy alcohol after 10 anyway. Im speaking from experience of having worked at sainsburys that opened at 7 am and closed at 10pm but i do shop in tesco after 10pm on friday nights
OP im sure if you go at 8 or 9am then you will be fine
  • I went into my local tesco yesterday AM and bought 6 cases of beer, they used to limit it to 3 but seem to have stopped that now, and my till reciept says 9.07, that was my first of many visits yesterday to various Mr T's as there beer offer is worth stocking up on.
  • i think its down to the hours that the store applies for locally.
There is a big tesco extra near me that i'm sure serves booze 24hrs a day but a few miles down the road another 24hr store has only just applied for a 24hr license.
  • Perhaps there are regional differences, i.e England/Scotland?
In Scotland, it's 10am-10pm 7 days a week now, it used to be 8am-10pm with the exception of Sunday when it was 12pm-10pm.
  • blue_haddock is correct, each store has to apply for a license, and the license will stipulate the hours of sale. The store right next to my house sells booze twenty four hours ... pretty handy for impromptu parties!
  • Even if they have a license for 24 hours they may not use it. My local store used to stop selling at 11pm until 8pm except in build up to Christmas, since new manager has taken over they sell it all the time. You are best off giving them a ring and asking.
  • Many thanks for all your replies. Aiming to go about 8ish but I will ring them before I go just to check.
  • you should be fine if it is a 24 hour store... the new licencing laws made it so that you can buy 24 hours - they used 2 block those particular aisles off before the laws but they are fully accessable these days
PS: sorry to be pedantic however, licence is the noun and license is the verb unless you are american where they spell both same
  • Each shop has its own alcohol licence so times that alcohol can be served will vary from store to store. Some local authorities don't issue many 24 hour alcohol licences whilst others issue them more freely. There is a website where you can find shops that sell alcohol 24 hours a day in London which I find rather useful. I'm not sure if there are similar sites listing 24 hour off licences in other parts of the UK (maybe worth searching for).
  • Alcohol can only be sold in supermarkets in Scotland between 1000 - 2200 7 days a week.
  • I know what my previous reply said but ive seen in a 24 hours tesco the alcohol aisles open for customers to drink whereas on a friday or saturday night its cornered off
  • Our local Tesco is a 24-hour one, but I'm almost certain I noticed a sign at the door saying that it does not sell alcohol between Friday 10pm and Saturday 8am. I think all the rest of the time though it does... it's open from 8am Monday to either 10pm or midnight Saturday, and it's only Friday night that's limited.
