A question about : Can I reclaim ppi payments on behalf of my mother?

Hi. I've been going through my mums finances with her(terrifying!!) and I have seen that she has been paying Freemans catalogue a 'complete care' insurance of Ј15.36 a month for many years! Having just read the t&c of said insurance I realised that what she thought she was covered for and the reality is very different!
My mum is Greek and her understanding of English is not great so all things considered I thing she would have a claim? I'm incensed about this as I think her ignorance and lack of understanding have been taken advantage of- yet again!
Any help/advice would be greatly received. I'm concerned that if I start a process that she will be plagued with calls that she is unable to deal with or understand-help!!
Thanks in advance
Liz

  • Hi
She (you) could certainly try putting in a claim if you think it was missold. Whether its likely to be successful won't be based on her comprehension of English though. Its more likely to be based on whether it was a pre-ticked form when she applied for the product or something similar.
It shouldn't trigger calls or hassle for her. Usually it just results in a letter or 2, which presumably you could deal with when she receives it.
Probably worth posting or looking on the PPI reclaim section of the forum, for both the templates letters and to see if anyone else has successfully reclaimed this from that catalogue company.
Have you cancelled the cover so she is not paying it anymore at least.
  • you would have to get your mum to write to them giving you permission to act on her behalf or go see a solicitor and get power of attorney, otherwise they wont be able to discuss anything with you cos of the data protection act, after that then i dont see a problem making a claim, one problem i do see tho is your mums lack of understanding of the policy does not constitute mis-selling, but i have limited knowlage so prob someone else with more understanding of ppi claims will post
  • You shouldn't need to go to a solicitor for POA, that will cost you in the region of Ј400-Ј600 depending on the area, solicitor etc. A POA gives you power of all her finances and you don't really need that.
Just a letter from your mother stating that she gives you permission to discuss all matters of that account, I had to do this with my grandad when we were trying to find details of a bank account which had his pension going into and the Bank of Ireland accepted a simple letter.
