A question about : best way to transfer money to france

Don't know if I'm in the right place, I'm brand new to this and confused!

I have a question.....

I need to send Ј1000 from my bank Barclays in England to my bank in France CA. (don't know if I'm allowed to mention names of banks?) I have sent this way before and think (Ј15) and x rate not great, I think it's probably most expensive way to send. Barclays said I should open personal 'euro' account with them and will be able to transfer for free??? and slightly higher exchange rate, I don't really believe them, I'm sure there are other fees and exchange rate probably not very good either.

I started looking at money transfer specialists eg Hifx, transferwise, currencyfair etc and my head is spinning!! The exchange rate seems better, do they have add on fees, would my CA account charge too to accept the money?
Seems everyone wants a share!
Sorry for the rant,
What should I do?......any advice gratefully received.

Best answers:

  • I've used TransferWise a few times and find them very good.
This branch of the forum is specifically for people who had issues with Crown Currency Exchange going bust. You should look in the Flights, Currency and Car Hire section.
  • Thanks you for giving me your advice, Yes my bank did charge, I'm going to give Hifx a try this time.
I was lost, and now I'm found.... hopefully in the right section
  • I have got a € cheque from my UK bank and posted it to my bank in France, cost Ј10 for Ј2000.
