A question about : Best TV?

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/s_actio...-10004775.html

Can some technical, gadget, geek help me decide please?

Kind of leaning towards the Samsung because of the 5.1 sound?

Thank you

  • No amount of gimmicky audio decoding is not going to make a TV panel sound nice.
If you are not going to be using eternal speakers then you will need to go and listen to them, spec tell you nothing. And if you are going to be using externals the amp will do the decoding properly.
  • The Panasonic. Bigger than the LGs and cheaper than one of them.
It has an ARC HDMI port which the Samsung lacks, and it seems to have a fancier remote. I also like the stand better and from personal experience I have 1 Pana TV with better sound than 1 Samsung TV.
This is all of course just from spec sheet without actually comparing the pictures on the TVs!
Not much in between those 2 to be honest, I'd be happy with either.
  • So to confirm then... The panasonic allows me to use external speakers because of the ARC?
  • Go along and listen, as sound seems to be very personal.
Within a block of reviews you can find comments ranging from tinny sound to excellent.
Also, if you go to somewhere like Richer Sounds, you can have a demo within a room, instead of an open sales floor.
  • Well i visited Currys today and have to say im disappointed with the Panasonic tv. The LG s looked much better. The stand looked ugly on the panasonic!
Think i will go with this one. https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-...pdt.html#cat-0
Lets hope Boxing day sales slash the prices!
  • Are you really going to let stand aesthetics influence your choice of TV?
  • I think it's rather amusing that someone asks for recommendations for the "best TV" then ignores everything in favour of a nice looking stand.
  • You obviously played with the settings on both TVs before judging the picture? Because 'shop mode' just means turning everything up to 11 for the bright environment in the shop, which bears no resemblence to your living room.
ARC can help with connectivity, not simply provide it. HDMI can carry sound in one direction, say from the blu ray plyer to the soundbar, and another cable from soundbar to TV. You hear the sound from the sound bar, the picture (and the sound possibly) gets passed onto the TV.
What ARC adds, if the soundbar, cable and TV are compatible, is an audio return channel - IE the TV's sound (for example from the internal tuner) can be played through the soundbar via that same cable. This will generally save you from connecting a digital optical cable between the two.
  • LG Soundbar that i liked which i believe is only compatible with LG Tvs[/QUOTE]
Nope. You made that up, or the salesperson did.
You admit you don't know much, yet buy stuff (the soundbar, not the TV) without asking.
    Compatibility:
Does the TV and soundbar both have ARC? Yes? Compatible. Make sure your HDMI lead does ARC.
If not, then does your TV have a digital optical OUTPUT, and your soundbar a digital optical INPUT?
    If so, use that
If not, then does your TV have a digital coaxial OUTPUT, and your soundbar a digital coaxial INPUT?
    If so, use that
If not, then does your TV have a stereo phono OUTPUT, and your soundbar a stereo phono INPUT?
    If so, use that
If not, you would want to try the headphone output of the TV into the stereo phono of the soundbar.
  • Kurtis - my advice was the Panasonic, but I said it was a close call and I'd be happy with either. OP seems to prefer the look of the LG, which is legitimate. Prefering the picture quality is only legitimate if they've both been set up correctly, which is what I was checking. Soundbars only being compatible with their own brand is also not legitimate, because it't not true.
