A question about : Barclaycard offer via FOS

Two years ago I applied for a PPI refund with Barclaycard. They came back and said that I had consented to the PPI and they had it on my postal application. At the time, I decided there was no point pursuing it. Besides I had applied for my Barclays account overdraft charges and won them back so I felt I may have been pushing my luck. When I received the letter, I was literally moving house, a few days after it arrived.

I thought nothing of it until earlier this year. I had heard about banks initially fobbing people off and wondered whether Barclaycard had tried to do this with me? So I got in touch with the Ombudsman. I explained that it had been 2 years and that although I had applied in the post at the age of 18, I had phoned up once they received my application and gone through my details with them and they had said that PPI was what I needed to say on my application to help me be successful. If I got insurance on the card, it showed I was responsible. After sending the applicable details to the FOS I had a letter saying that Barclaycard WERE going to uphold my complaint! That the Ombudsman had felt that they hadnt explained what PPI was or the benefits of it to me, which never actually applied to me.

Yesterday the FOS sent me a letter saying that Barlcaycard would be 'making me an offer of compensation'.
Would be nice if I get anything before Christmas but it largely depends on their records. I got the card in 1998 and FOS said they may have to base their offer on the average amount customers back then paid.

Long and short? Never give up. I always took out PPI...on everything. I have struggled over the years BUT now I view it as a mini savings account if I get money back. Always try your luck. Its time to slim down these fat cats!

    You made your own decision as to whether you required the policy and could have benefited from this.

    She never make any claims.
    The case have been rejected,what chance does she have now?
  • It really depends on whether she understood what PPI was. I didn't, I was 18 and just wanted a credit card (which I regret to this day!) to buy a car. I would've said yes to any requirements they laid out to get the card. Also with it being so long ago, I wondered whether they were fobbing me off by saying they had my postal application but they didn't really. There was never a photo copy of my application with the relevant tick enclosed, so how could I be sure they weren't calling my bluff? Thats why I went to the Ombudsman. Its worth trying them, FOS. It can take 2 years though so bear this in mind. They've had mine since July so I have been very lucky to hear back so quickly!
