A question about : Anyone used Travel FX Recently

As a newbie to MSE I'm hoping someone might be able to advise me if they have used Travel FX for buying currency? They are try competitive and I've found several reviews on line but am still wary of transferring money directly to their account. Thanks

  • I have used TravelFX several times over the last few years as their rates are consistently the best. I have always been pleased with the service and have never had a probem. You can arrange a delivery date to suit too.
  • Internet only company. They claim that they have NO ABILITY WHATSOEVER to make out-going phone calls!! Ordered Ј800 of Turkish Lira from them in May, never arrived. They claim that they are doing their best to recover the money from Royal Mail but having since spoken to Royal Mail, the claim wasn't submitted till a MONTH LATER!! I've had but only a few emails from Travel FX, none of which have been useful. Ended up using credit card and now paying interest on that as a result. If you really want, no hassle, foreign exchange, I would definitely recommend that for a slightly lower rate (a few pence or so) I would get currency in person from a real exchange place. If you want to be stupid enough to still use Travel FX after this review, feel free to, though don't complain if the 'Trusted' Royal Mail lose your item or it goes missing, as you will unlikely get your money back as Travel FX seem only interested in taking your money and don't care about recovering it for you. Also, as it is BACS transfer only, YOU HAVE NO PROTECTION from your bank, so once your money has left your account, its gone. No getting it back! BEWARE.
  • Required Forints for trip to Budapest and best rate TravelFx even with charge for delivery as below Ј500. Ordered yesterday a.m. received confirmation e-mail and payment instructions (Bank Transfer only) within minutes. After completion received dispatch details and money was delivered this morning. E-mails were helpful and friendly and payig for delivery avoided trip to post-office to order and another trip to collect. Recommend TravelFX.

    I ordered Ј1,000 of euro's for my holiday leaving Good Friday 2013.I had a email confirmation they had received my bank transfer but they did not issue the euro's for 6 days, By then it was Easter week so I chased the delivery and they told me because I said my holiday was 29th March that was when they were delivering them. They agreed to "bump" the delivery up. However the post office did not deliver my euro's due to the snow.
    So I had to find a further Ј1,000 to take on holiday. The post office returned my euro's to TravelFX and they now want to charge me Ј80 as they will only accept them back on a buy back rate. I am fighting this but they have had my money for well over a month and I am still out of pocket.
    As my contract was with TravelFX and not the post office the lack of delivery is their problem not mine.
    Really not worth the hassle of using them
  • Like others on this site I have suffered at the dubious conduct and cynical exploitation of customers who entrust Travel FX Ltd with large sums of money, expecting an honest and speedy exchange transaction.
    I was unfortunate enough to telephone them on a Thursday for confirmation that, should I order them, would I receive Ј500 worth of euros by noon the following Monday (cutting it fine I know as we were leaving on the Tuesday morning.
    I was assured that I would receive them by pre-noon Recorded Delivery and they proceeded to suggest it would be easier to take my details there and then over the phone.
    I'll try to keep this short but basically they withheld the exchange on the grounds that they said they had emailed me to ask for a further Ј2 and a few pence to round up the amount to make it more convenient to package the euro denominations. I wouldn't have minded at all but I never saw the email and when I rang them after the delivery deadline they said NO they hadn't sent them, NO they wouldn't be sending them and NO I wouldn't get my Ј500 back in time to purchase euros elsewhere. This disgraceful business practice, which they were obviously well practised in, left me only a few hours to madly arrange to get another Ј500 and to obtain euros at a far worse exchange rate.
    My point is that (a) they could have rounded the transaction down and refunded the difference or (b) provided Ј500 worth which is what I'd asked for and the order value they'd accepted or (c) telephoned me when the extra Ј2+ hadn't arrived after a short time. Heaven forbid that they use option (d) which would have been to complete with the rounded up figure and requested the tiny difference after the event.
    Any of these would have been what any decent company would have done but no, Travel FX Ltd would rather cause innocent holidaymakers an enormous amount of inconvenience and cost, totally out of proportion to the petty extra Ј2+ which they said they'd asked for.
    Needless to say, they DIDN'T refund my money for several weeks and then had the audacity to charge me Ј71.02 in, I assume, cancellation fees for an exchange which THEY prevented from completion and reversal fees for changing my Ј500 back to sterling which is obviously nonsense as they never changed it into euros in the first place. It is really annoying to think that they hold us customers in such contempt that they think we'd accept this type of behavior.
    I am not accepting this and took legal advice. They have 14 days to pay the rest and then they'll be dragged through the small claims procedures which, at the very least, will cause them no little inconvenience as I will summons them if they ignore it. I know Ј71 odd isn't a great deal of money but why should I allow them to take it from me. I hesitate to use the word steal even though that is what I believe it to be.
  • Can't see any problem here. It worked like clockwork. Ordered, payed, bank checked security, passed it, order acknowledged and currency shipped. Can't ask for any more.
  • Don't know why there are these negative reviews. I ordered East Carribean Dollars on line, then decided to get them delivered a little earlier - just in case. Gave them a call, and without any problems, the delivery date was pulled forward. Made a BACS payment and then received a confirmation of the order. As soon as it was despatched, I received a second e-mail giving the Royal Mail track & trace number. Checked it out the following day, and it said package was 'out for delivery'. It arrived just before noon, exactly as advised. Faultless service. Will definately use again.
  • Wouldn't touch them again with a bargepole.
    Ordered and paid through my bank as direct transfer (got a receipt from my bank confirming transfer completed and money would be in their account within max 2 hours). When I didn't get any acknowledgement of the transfer I sent an email. I then phoned again after two days at which point they told me they couldnt find my money!
    Numerous emails and phonecalls followed. Finally they confimed they had the money and it would be sent the following day (Friday) with guaranteed delivery as the following 'BUSINESS DAY!!!'......which would mean the Monday...Too late! After another email, this time headed COMPLAINT' I was told they would 'upgrade' my delivery to the Saturday. It finally arrived on the Saturday but not without the threat of court action and a lot of stress and inconvenience for which, to date, they have totally ignored.
    NEVER EVER USE THEM. For the difference of a few cents it is just not worth it.
  • Had to cancel an order because TravelFX had been 'let down by suppliers and run out of stock' and couldn't deliver in the required time frame.
    I was charged the punitive sum of Ј93.81 on a Ј702.59 order.
    Use this organisation at your peril!
  • Not happy with travel FX at all.
    An error on the delivery date must have crept in on the order online (sometimes there's a default on dates if something else in an online form is altered) which I only spotted because the delivery didn't arrive.
    They re-arranged delivery when I emailed in spite of my instructions saying that would be too late - and now I'm stuck with paying for Ј25 for cancellation or Ј20 for pre 9am delivery after phoning them.
    I buy a lot of tickets etc online and have never had problems with dates before. Will not use them again
