A question about : Anyone know much about Beamly?

I entered a comp yesterday by leaving a couple of comments there, and now I'm getting contacted by a few people opening up a 'chat'. They're contacting via the site, which forwards the messages to me. It's all on topic, and could well be fine and safe, but I've had a bit of a dodgy experience before along these lines, and it's left me not really sure what to take at face value, and what to steer clear of.

Anyone else had good/bad experience with Beamly?

Thanks

  • Yes I did after entering a comp. I just went to my account settings on Beamly and unticked all email notifications (there is a huge list!) and haven't had any since! I got weirdos wanting to chat to me too - no way!!
  • Thanks Blue Girl. It's funny how I kind've needed someone to say they felt the same way, to validate my not responding. I'm going to do what you did and disable notifications

  • I remember the comp - something like you had to say what sport you liked most, what reality tv show you liked the most and something else??? Yes, just untick all the boxes and shouldn't hear any more
  • Beamly is a TV chat app type of thing. I use it quite a lot - especially when Big Brother or Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is on! haha. As with all 'chat' type of things there are always odd people lurking about
  • It's prob quite a good idea. But I'd prefer a forum, like this, where you can come and go when you like and chip in if you want to say something. But not to be messaged by individuals - feels too close for comfort. I've unticked everything now, and feel loads better for it.
    Thanks team MSE

  • I'm like you Blu - prefer forums like MSE!
  • Same experience for me. Left me posts for the comp and got a few replies. I was polite and replied back, nothing untoward.
But then a select few users, opened new groups and keep tagging my name. I've had about 60 email notifications since yesterday afternoon - all tags of my name to get me to go on and talk about shows. Way too much. Notifications unticked and beamly away for now.
Nothing against the site, just overkill with the notifications. When you see you have 20 emails on a Tuesday night you think there has to be a win coming through that, and they're all notifications for on there...
  • Sorry Beamly - all is forgiven! They just emailed me to say I've won the iPad!!!!
  • Yay! What a fab result. Congrats

  • Thanks Blulu. Well pleased, my best win to date.
I think the people doing the bulk of the tagging and notifications actually work for Beamly or are involved in some way and were trying to gently (but overzealously) encourage people to post more beyond their 'comp entry' post to help expand the community.
Since my win was posted it's the same people who have posted a reply on that thread and talking to the poster of the win.
So nothing untoward with the notifications and who these people are but it was definitely discouraging me to continue posting due to the frequency of them.
Maybe i'll venture back on in the future - on my new iPad!
  • Good point, and defo feels better to think might've just been a bit of over zealous marketing for their site.

  • I was just going to say I'd heard of Beamly recently, then you said you'd won the iPad and I realised you're one of my comping fb friends!
  • Blame me.. I posted up that comp I had to un-subscribe too, as I was inundated with messages about Hollyoaks!
  • No blame here Mclarkie - delighted you posted it! Once you switch notifications off, it's not so bad.
As for Beamly, usually too busy watching TV and comping, to be able to go on and live chat about the shows.
Haha Gems, couldn't resist posting that one on facebook when I got the WEM. Was VERY happy when reading it!
