A question about : Anyone know how to get cheaper Accident Recovery?

Hi.

I've just been with Ford Insure for the past 3 years, they have given me the cheapest car insurance. However this year they quoted Ј760 while direct line quoted me Ј520 and they said they didn't price match. So, bye-bye Ford Insure. The problem is that when I was with Ford Insure they did Joint Solution 3 Cover for just over Ј50 a year (compared to when you go to RAC direct for Ј143) That's a big difference.

Direct Line say they can give me Green Flag cover for Ј90ish. But I really want to stay with RAC as I really like their service. I don't like the idea that Green Flag use the nearest garage. Can I get it cheaper? I think AA do it for Ј124 but that's still kind of expensive.

I know that they don't do price matching, but has anyone had any experience with actually getting a price match or similar money saving ideas?

Best answers:

  • How about getting a quote from the RAC or AA directly for your car insurance, they must offer a discount if you are insured with them on the breakdown service.
This post may need moving to a more suitable board - what do you think MODS?
  • I tend not to bother with the RAC or AA as they allways seem to be loads more expensive than if i get the quotes direct. Try TESCO for motor insurance and i think they do breakdown cover for extra aswell.
  • Thanks guys.
With regards to moving this to a more sutable board- please do move it- but I am not sure where. Would it be possible to have a 'car' section or a transport section for trains, planes and motors?
I have opted for Direct Line as they were the cheapest Insurance. Not sure whether to trust Green Flag. Anyone tried them before? I like RAC, but why oh why does it have to cost so much! Aggghh.
  • Me again.
I've not been moved yet... Martin, if you are looking... how about creating that new motor discussion area?
Anyway, I just phoned the AA who are doing Free Joint Cover on all their accident policies. So:
Option 3 is Ј126 for the year.
The same on RAC is Ј143 (done through the internet) Apparantly one big difference is that the RAC will come out to you if you have an accident, where as the AA will not (as they say your car insurance cover this) I must say I prefer this option as a back up with the RAC. But at Ј143 it so much more expensive. However the RAC say that they can accept post payment- ie they offered to do it from the 1st september, where as the AA couldn't do that and said that the offer wouldn't be around in September. Great customer service, eh?
  • OK perhaps this is better?
Just looked in the LXDirect Catalogue (one with clothes in that you get delivered to your house and not the one you pick up at the store) and at the back you can join the RAC.
Roadside Ј39.00; Roadside and Recovery Ј80.50; Roadside and Recovery Ј79.00 and standard Cover with RAC no-call-out discount Ј110.00

  • How about Auto Aid Breakdown Recovery (I think I've seen this on another thread a long time ago)
Contact them at Boncaster Limited Tel. 01277 235500
Mine cost Ј28 for the year for myself and husband (we can be driving any car) - must be a MARRIED spouse.
The insurance does not cover cost of parts, or any repairs not carried out at the roadside.
You pay for the recovery at the time, and claim back afterwards.
They refund call-out fees and labour charges for a repair at the roadside, but if broken down at home or within one mile, they will only refund up to Ј45 for costs involved.
They will also cover emergency hotel accommodation, or taking vehicle with you and up to 5 people to a place of your choice. Can refund cost of alternative transport if you choose to do that instead.
I haven't required use of the service as yet (fingers crossed), but I can't find anything else providing all this at such a good price.
Paying up front may be off-putting for some, but I think it's worth it. I expect credit card would suffice.
If anyone else has had experience of Auto Aid, it would be useful to know (good or bad)
    Hope the above helps
  • Hi
There's an article on the main site about breakdown cover I think you'd find useful. Click here.
  • I know I am mad, and due to this certainly not a money saving expert. This is a confession... I think I am going to go with RAC at Ј143 for the two of us. It's peace of mind really. I know there are much cheaper options out there, but I just can't make myself do it...
    Sorry.
I pray that you may all forgive me...
